Top Ten Movies of 2007

This is a listing (sometimes with a short explanation of my ten favorite movies I saw last year. As there is a bunch of stuff I did not see, I cannot claim it to be comprehensive or authoritative. These are just things I like.

10.) Once- Irish Writer/Director John Carney does a great job constructing a short, simple love story. Things don't always end up as you'd like them to, but that does not mean the process is not worthwhile.

8.) Superbad- A great comedy with some unexpected depth.

6.) Before the Devil Knows You're Dead- Another fantastic performance from P.S. Hoffman. He should have been nominated for an Oscar for this rather than Charlie Wilson's War.

5.) Zodiac- Released much earlier in the year and got lost a bit in the shuffle. David Fincher does a fantastic job constructing a dark, almost nauseating atmosphere for him characters to reside in.

4.) The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford- In any other year, this (along with the two movies in front of it) could have been best picture. That speaks to the depth of talent on display.

3.) Juno

2.) No Country For Old Men- I was more excited for this than any other movie this year. Shortly after finishing the book I received a phone call alerting me to the fact that the Coen brothers were adapting and directing the movie. My long wait was well worth it.

1.) There Will Be Blood- Daniel Day Lewis turns in a career performance and Paul Thomas Anderson displays a depth and talent that not even I (a devoted fan) thought he possessed. This movie is heartbreaking and dismally beautiful. It is an absolute classic of American cinema and I would go so far as to say it is the greatest achievement in film making of the decade.
